Important Natural-Stone Information

Kandla Grey is a natural stone product, meaning variations in colour, veining, texture, dimensions and thickness are completely normal. These differences give sandstone its individual character and should not be considered manufacturing defects.

For larger installations, open several packs and mix slabs as laying progresses. This distributes the natural shades and surface variations evenly throughout the finished area.

We also recommend ordering approximately 10% more paving than the measured area to allow for cuts, selection, handling and possible breakages.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size are the slabs?

Each slab measures approximately 900mm × 600mm. Minor dimensional variations are normal because the slabs have naturally hand-cut edges.

How thick are the paving slabs?

The slabs have a nominal thickness of approximately 20mm, with a natural tolerance of around ±5mm. Variations in thickness should be accommodated within the mortar bed during installation.

How many slabs are included in a full pack?

A full 18.5m² pack contains 33 slabs measuring 900 × 600mm.

Is a smaller pack available?

Yes. A split pack containing 20 slabs is available and covers approximately 10.8m² when installed with joints of around 10mm.

Are all Kandla Grey slabs the same colour?

No. Kandla Grey sandstone naturally contains soft and medium-grey shades, subtle veining and occasional tonal variations. Mixing slabs from different packs will create a more balanced finished appearance.

What does a riven surface mean?

Riven sandstone is split along its natural layers, producing a textured and slightly uneven surface. This gives the paving its traditional natural-stone character while providing additional grip underfoot.

Is Kandla Grey sandstone slippery?

The naturally riven finish and R11 slip rating provide useful grip for outdoor areas. However, any paving can become slippery if moss, algae or debris is allowed to build up, so regular cleaning is important.

Where can these slabs be used?

These slabs are suitable for patios, pathways, terraces, courtyards, garden seating areas and other outdoor pedestrian spaces.

Are they suitable for use around a swimming pool?

The textured surface makes them a potential option for pool surrounds. However, the complete installation—including drainage, sealing and slip resistance—should be professionally assessed for the specific environment.

Can these slabs be used for a driveway?

These paving slabs are primarily designed for pedestrian areas. They should not be used on a driveway unless the slabs, sub-base and installation method have been professionally specified to withstand vehicle loads.

How should the slabs be installed?

Natural sandstone should be laid on a full-contact mortar bed supporting the entire underside of every slab. Spot bedding should be avoided. Applying a suitable slurry primer to the underside of each slab is strongly recommended to improve adhesion.

What joint width should be used?

A joint width of approximately 10mm is recommended. Minor adjustments may be needed because of the slabs’ naturally hand-cut edges.

Does Kandla Grey sandstone need sealing?

Sealing is not essential in every installation, but a suitable breathable natural-stone sealer is recommended. It can help protect the paving against moisture, staining and weathering while making routine maintenance easier.

How should I clean the paving?

Sweep the paving regularly and clean it using water and an appropriate natural-stone cleaner when required. Avoid acidic cleaners and harsh chemicals, as these may stain or damage sandstone.

How much extra paving should I order?

We recommend ordering approximately 10% more than the measured area. This allows for cuts, natural slab selection, handling and potential transit breakages.
